My engagement with students goes beyond the classroom and beyond the extracurricular, although it makes use of both modes of interaction.  As professors, we often get to know our students on a long-term basis; watch them develop as intellectuals and as people.  I have been eager to be involved with students on projects that help them in these endeavors.

  • Encourage students to apply to national fellowships, like Fulbright and Marshall, or the Critical Languages Scholarship.
  • Work with them on their application materials (here is an annotated application essay I use as a model)
  • Write recommendation letters (from 2 to 12 during the course of a semester)
  • Help students showcase their work at local confences (such as the panel on Pussy Riot for Lewis & Clark's Gender Studies conference in 2013)
  •  I serve as faculty supervisor to Lewis & Clark’s Russian Club.  I have also been involved as faculty mentor with students on Lewis & Clark’s foreign language publication, Polyglot.
